Black Swan

Black Swan is a 2010 American film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, and Barbara Hershey. Variously described as a psychological thriller or a psychological horror film.

The plot revolves around a production of Swan Lake by a prestigious New York City ballet company. The production requires a ballerina to play both the innocent White Swan and the sensual Black Swan. One dancer, Nina (Portman), is a perfect fit for the White Swan, while Lily (Kunis) has a personality that matches the Black Swan. When the two compete for the parts, Nina finds a dark side to herself.

This film has had a lot of hype around it so I was expecting good things from this one. I went to see it on Friday and I have to say that this is well deserving of the praise its receiving. The story is original and unique and is extremely absorbing. Natalie Portmans performance in this film is fantastic. This film kept me riveted from start to finish. The film was also a visual feast with beautiful lighting and camera work.

This is a must see!

Street Dance 3D

leave a comment »

Today I went to the cinema to see the preview of Street Dance in 3D which is a British dance film. The film is directed by Max Giwa and Dania Pasquini. George Sampson makes his debut appearance on the big screen along with Diversity and Flawless from Britain’s Got Talent. The soundtrack includes N-Dubz, Tinie Tempah, Lightbulb Thieves, Chipmunk and Cheryl Cole.

The film is about a dance crew who are set to take part in the Street Dance Championships. They are looking for a rehearsal space and they are forced to work with ballet dancers from the Royal Dance School in exchange for rehearsal space. They have to allow the ballet dancers to join their dance crew and take part in the competition.

Overall I thought that this was a good family film which i think children and adults will enjoy. I didn’t really feel that the 3D effects were needed as they didn’t really add anything to the film. I think that 3D tends to work best with animated films such as Avatar or Coraline. I thought that the film had a fairly predictable plot but I still enjoyed it. I also thought that the dance groups in the film were very impressive- especially Flawless from Britain’s Got Talent. I would recommend this film for families.

I enjoyed this film a lot considering that it’s not normally the kin of film that I would watch- a feel good family film.
