Nine

Nine is a 2009 musical-romantic film which is directed by Rob Marshall. Its based on Arthur Kopits book for the 1982 Tony Award-winning musical of te same name. The film was released on boxing day 2009 and has a cast including Academy Award winners Daniel Day- Lewis, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Golden Globe winner Kate Hudson and Grammy Award winner Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas.

Th plot is about director Guido Contini at the age of fifty facing a midlife crisis who is struggling creatively and is involved in a variety of complicated romantic involvements.

I thought that this film was unique in its style and the mixture of musical imaginations and real life scenes blended really well and i thought that Daniel Day- Lewis gave a very strong performance. The film was visually very stunning and the film was interesting throughout. The only thing that i was disappointed about was the lack of interaction between some of the main characters.

Overall i enjoyed this film and is worth seeing if you like films such as Chicago and Moulin Rouge

Nativity

Nativity is a British comedy directed by Debbie Isitt and was released on 27 November 2009. The film stars Martin Freeman and Ashley Jensen. The film is written by its director and was also partially improvised.

The film is about Mr Maddens who is a frustrated, under-achieving primary school teacher. He is chosen to produce the school nativity play. Every year they compete with a local private school to see who’s is best.

Mr Madden’s lies to Shakespeare about how a hollywood producer, his ex-girlfriend, will be making the nativity into a film starring the pupils.

I thought that the film was very good overall- i thought that it was a film that appeals to a wide audience so its good for the whole family. It’s also very funny throughout. It’s a feel good- christmas film that was well worth going to see.

Also because there were parts of the film with the children that were improvised it made the film a lot more genuine and real.

A very good Xmas film for the family

St Trinian’s 2: The legend of Frittons Gold

St. Trinians 2: The Legend of Frittons Gold is directed by Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson, both directed the previous film in the series. The title is a reference to the 1994 film city Slickers 2: The Legend of Curlys Gold.

I had seen the first film and thought that it was okay. It’s a lighthearted film with some funny parts throughout. The film has a good cast of actors including Rupert Everett who plays Miss Camilla Fritton. I thought that he was very funny and pops up as various characters in the film. The film also has Colin Firth, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley and also features Sarah Harding from Girls Aloud.

Overall the film is a lighthearted- feel good film that is very much the same standard as the first.

A good film for the Xmas holidays for the whole family

Avatar is an American 3D, science fiction film which was written and directed by James Cameron. The film is co-produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and its about a conflict on a place called Pandora, an inhabited Earth-sized satellite of Polyphemus one of three fictional gas giants orbiting Alpha Centauri A.

The film is about the human race going to Pandora to collect valuable resources from where the Navi live. The main character Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is on a mission to live his live through his genetically made Avatar in the world of Pandora where he learns to become part of the Navi tribe.

The film is out in both 2D and 3D formats, along with an IMAX 3D release in selected cinemas. The film is being touted as a breakthrough in terms of filmmaking technology, for its 3D viewing and stereoscopic filmmaking with cameras that were specially designed for the film’s production.

The film is visually beautiful and the 3D experience far out does any film using this before. The plot is very good- has a feeling of a mix of different stories such as Romeo and Juliet, Lion King and others. The film has fantastic action scenes, effects, design, dialogue, it has a romantic storyline throughout. Also the film has a fantastic cast of actors including- Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Zoe Saldana and many others who all give brilliant performances.

This film is brilliant all round and is a definite ‘must see’ in my opinion. This is one of my favourite films of 2009 and could become a classic. This film seems to have set a new standard of filmmaking.

Carriers

Carriers is a horror film about four people surviving a viral pandemic in the USA. It was written and directed by Alex Pastor and David Pastor and stars Chris Pine (Star Trek) and Piper Perabo.

The film starts with them driving when they are stopped in the road by a man by the side of the road with his daughter in the car. The film follows the four main characters.

It’s a style of film that has been done many times before like 28 days later. This film is similar just without the zombies. It’s about the four characters fleeing from a virus. Things start to spiral out of control when they encounter the virus. The film focuses on the relationships between the characters. They have to make terrible decisions and encounter various scenarios to reach their destination- Turtle Beach (where they grew up as children).

I thought that this film was ok but it lacked any real punch. Chris Pine was good and carried the film. It was a good idea to focus on the relationships but lacked any real emotion.

Where The Wild Things Are

leave a comment »

Where the Wild Things Are is an American fantasy film which was directed by Spike Jonze and was adapted from the well-known children’s book by Maurice Sendak in 1963. The film is a mixture of live action, costumes, animatronics, CGI and puppets. The film stars Max Records, Catherine Keener and Mark Ruffalo. It also features various voices as the parts of the beasts- James Gandolfini, Paul Dano, Lauren Ambrose and Forest Whitaker. The film is produced by Tom Hanks.

The film is about a young boy called Max who is very lonely and has a wild imagination. He gets angry with his mum and bites her. He then runs off and he travels to a world where he meets a wild bunch of beasts and creatures.

I read this book when i was little so i was very excited to see this film. I feel that the film captures the style and imagination of the novel really well. It’s very imaginative, loving, warm, playful but also it keeps the slightly dark element that was in the original book. There have been questions about whether this film is suitable for children- I think that it is. It gives out a positive message and focuses on the values of friendship and family.

Overall i really loved this film- it has excellent performances from the actors, its funny at times and its beautifully filmed. The CGI and real live action blends together very well and is very convincing,

a feel good film
