Saw 3D

leave a comment »

Today I went to see Saw 3D at the cinema that is directed by Kevin Greutert, written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. The film stars Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Sean Patrick Flanery and Cray Elwes. It’s the 7th and final film in the Saw series.

This film is about Jigsaw survivors that gather to seek advice from a self-help guru and fellow survivor. His name is Bobby Dagen, a man whose own dark secrets unleash a new wave of terror.

I have always gone to see the Saw films at the cinema as I was a big fan of the first three films. I cant help but feel like after the third they began to lose the impact they originally had. I thought that this film was fairly average and didn’t match up to previous installments. The plot has some interesting twists but is let down by some dodgy acting. I also thought that this film didn’t need to be in 3D. It’s a good film to see over the Halloween break but its nothing special.

Alpha and Omega

Yesterday I saw Alpha and Omega at the cinema which is a 3D computer animated film that is produced by Crest Animation Productions and Richard Rich. The film is directed by Anthony Bell and Ben Gluck. The film stars the voices of Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Christina Ricci, with Dennis Hopper in his last film appearance and Danny Glover.

The film is about two young wolves at opposite ends of their pack’s social order are thrown together into a foreign land and need each other to return home, but love complicates everything.

I thought that this film was ok but not as good as other kids films out there at the moment. I felt that this was aimed at slightly younger children. The film has a basic plot with some sweet moments. It’s a good film to take young children to over the holidays.

Africa United

Yesterday I got to see Africa United at the cinema which is a film that is directed by Deborah Gardner-Paterson and stars Emmanuel Jal, Eriya Ndayambaje, Roger Nsengiyumva and Sanyu Joanita Kintu.

The film is about three Rwandan kids who decide to travel 3000 miles to the World Cup in South Africa. They have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity and will do whatever it takes to get there. They have to pull together and use all of their wit to reach their destination.

This film was better than I expected. I thought that it had a similar feel to the award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. The children in the film give good performances. The film has an interesting twist with animated parts. The film has a good plot, heartwarming moments and I would describe this as a feel-good film.

On Tuesday I got to see Legend of the Guardians which is a 2010 computer-animated fantasy/adventure that is loosely based on the first three volumesof the series Guardians of Ga’Hoole by Kathryn Lasky. The film is directed by Zack Snyder and stars Jim Sturgess, Geoffrey Rush, Ryan Kwanten, Emily Barclay, Anthony LaPaglia, David Wenham, Helen Mirren, Joel Edgerton, Hugo Weaving and Miriam Margolves as the main characters.

The film is about a young owl called Soren who is enthralled by his fathers stories of the Guardians of Ga’ Hoole. They are a mythic group of warriors who fought a great battle to save owlkind from the evil owls known as the Pure Ones. Soren dreams of joining the Guardians. His brother, Kludd, yearns to hunt. Soren and Kludd are captured by the Pure Ones. Kludd decides to join the Pure Ones whilst Soren makes his escape. Soren teams up with new friends to take on the evil Pure Ones.

I have to say that I absolutely loved this film and was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I thought that the film had a good plot with an impressive cast. I also loved the soundtrack to the film. The thing that impressed me most was the amazing visuals and 3D special effects. It’s a beautiful film that looked amazing. I loved the tone and style of this film and it kept me entertained throughout with exciting action sequences.

This is a great film that you should see with the whole family

RED

Yesterday I got to see Red at the cinema which is an action comedy that is very loosely based on the comic books created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer. Robert Schwentke directed the film and screenplay by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber. The film stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Richard Dreyfuss, James Remar and Helen Mirren.

The film is about four retired CIA agents. They suddenly become the agency’s top targets and now framed for assassination. They must use all of their cunning and teamwork to stay one step ahead of their pursuers.

I thought that this film was reasonably good and managed to keep me entertained. It has a brilliant cast with strong performances from Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman. The film has a really good mix of action, drama and comedy. I would describe it as a big, loud, exciting, action thriller which is full of laughs. The film does fade slightly in parts but overall is very entertaining.

Today I saw Ramona and Beezus which is an American film that is adapted from the books by Beverly Cleary. The film stars Joey King, Selena Gomez, John Corbett, Bridget Moynahan, Ginnifer Goodwin, Fanny MacAlton, Josh Duhamel and Sandra Oh.

The film is about a young girl called Ramona who has a vivid imagination. She has a sister called Beezus who is trying to get her crush Henry to go out with her. She finds that she has to use her mind to help save her family and their home.

I thought that this was a very sweet and heartwarming film that will appeal to the whole family. Its one of the best real life kids films that I have seen in a while and felt similar to Nanny Mcphee. The film was funny, whimsical, sweet, touching and has a simple story that is easy to follow.

A good film to see with the kids over the half term break

Film Rating: 7.5/10

Made In Dagenham

Made in Dagenham is a British film that is directed by Nigel Cole. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Miranda Richardson, Rosamund Pike and Jaime Winstone.

The film is about the 1968 Ford sewing machinists strike that took place at the Ford Dagenham assembly plant. Female workers walked out in protest against sexual discrimination and wanted equal pay.

I thought that this film was pretty good. The film has an interesting plot that manages to mix a blend of humour, drama and politics. The film is entertaining and I really thought that Sally Hawkins performance was very good. It’s a very funny film with British humour.

Worth a watch if you like films like An Education or Nowhere Boy

Despicable Me

I recently saw Despicable Me at the cinema which is a computer-animated 3D film from Universal Pictures. The film stars Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Julie Andrews, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig and Miranda Cosgrove.

The film is about a criminal mastermind who is trying to steal a shrink ray gun from a rival criminal villan. He uses a trio of orphan girls to help this happen. He soon finds himself changing as he developes a bond with the children.

I really loved this film and is one of my favourite kids films I have seen recently. I thought that it was very different to any other kids film and had a dark style of humour. The film is also very quirky and odd at times which kept it entertaining. The story is also very heartwarming and has some very sweet moments. This is an excellent film that I recommend for the whole family.

The Social Network

leave a comment »

I recently saw The Social Network at the cinema which is a 2010 drama about the founding of the internet website Facebook. The film was directed by David Fincher and stars Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake.

The film is about a Harvard undergrad called Mark Zuckerberg who is a computer genius working on a new idea. What begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network revolution. Mark soon becomes the youngest billionaire ever but finds he has to face complications.

I was very excited to see this film as I had read a lot of positive reviews and thought that the trailer looked good. I did enjoy this film but not as much as I was expecting. The film is very interesting and it has a strong cast. The film at times feels a little slow and gets bogged down with all the legal complications. The film also focuses on the various relationships between the characters.

Vampires Suck

leave a comment »

I went to see Vampires Suck at the cinema recently which is a 2010 American vampire spoof film that is based on the Twilight film series. The film is directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. The film stars Jenn Proske, Matt Lanter, Chris N. Riggi, Ken Jeong and Anneliese van der Pol.

The film is basically a spoof of vampire movies- a teenager called Becca finds herself torn between two boys. She struggles in college with different dramas and everything comes to a head at the Prom.

This film what you would expect- its absolutely ridiculous but at the same time makes you laugh. The humour is very over the top and tends to be a bit hit or miss. The film pokes fun at Twilight and im sure that fans of Twilight will find this very funny. Its worth seeing if you like films such as Scary Movie. Its funny at times but nothing special.
